How to Crack the US Interview Question in Dubai

Most of us dream to visit the USA at least once in our lifetimes. This North American country has 52 states with some vibrant cities, beautiful national parks, state-of-the-art amusement parks, gorgeous beaches and much more. In short, every state has something unique to offer the visitors. So, a holiday in the USA would definitely be a memorable one, wherever you choose to go. However, you need a US visa, except if you are a citizen of one of the countries that is exempt from needing one.

Applying for a US visa is not just about submitting the application form along with the necessary documents. On the other hand, applicants have to go through an interview process, which is mandatory. Even if your application and documents are in order, there is a chance of not getting the visa if you do not perform well at the visa interview. Hence, we offer some tips and ways of answering the US visa interview questions that would help you to crack the interview with ease.

Tips for Cracking US Interview in Dubai

Here are some of the do's and don'ts that you should keep in mind while attending your interview for US visa at the consulate in Dubai.

Know the Type of Visa: There are two types of visit visa available for visiting USA, one is the B1 visa (US Business Visa) and the other is B2 visa (tourist visa). You need to be clear about the type of visa you need and prepare accordingly. If there is any discrepancy between the type of visa you have applied for and the reason for your visit, your US visa from Dubai would be rejected. So, apply carefully.

Passport and Visa Application Form: Before you download the online form (DS-160), you need to check the validity of your passport. Your passport should have at least 6 months validity from the date of travel. The visa application form should be filled completely and accurately. Apart from this, you need to submit recent passport size photographs and other necessary documents. Make sure that you carry all the documents mentioned (even those that you deem necessary) at the time of the interview.

Be Punctual: It is extremely important to be on time for your interview at the US Consulate in Dubai. If you arrive late, there is a chance of the interview getting cancelled. To avoid this kind of situation, it would be better if you arrive 15-30 minutes before the interview is scheduled. Also, it would be better to come alone as only the applicant would be allowed to enter the consular section for the interview.

Dress Well: Although there is no dress code for US visa interview, it would not make a good impression if you are dressed in your PJs or may be for a party at the nightclub. To be on the safer side, dress formally, like you would for a job interview. This would not only boost your confidence but also leave a good impression on the interviewer.

Be Honest: It is extremely important to be truthful while giving your US visa interview. You may think that lying about small things like whether you have relatives or friends in the US, if you have visited the country before, etc. may give you brownie points. However, it does not work like that. Everything can be crosschecked, and if they find you lying about something, your visa application would be rejected. So, be extremely honest about everything.

Be Confident: Your posture, expressions and gestures would reflect your confidence as much as your answers to the questions asked by the interviewer. So, make sure to have a pleasant face, keep eye contact with the interviewer and have the correct posture while sitting, standing or walking. Also, keep your hand gestures to the minimum, i.e. keep it as naturally as possible. Moreover, keep nervousness and tension at bay.

What is the purpose of your visit?

This is surely one of the most important questions and you should answer it correctly and clearly. Do not get into a long story. Prepare a clear and concise statement for the same. For example, I am visiting the US for my daughter's graduation or I am visiting the USA for a business meeting.

Have you visited the US before?

This is a simple question. Answer yes if you have and no if you haven't. If you have visited the country before, you may be asked about the details of the previous visa. Provide the details only if asked.

What would be the duration of your visit?

If you have planned the dates of your departure and arrival, provide the exact dates to the interviewer. If you haven't, tell him or her how long you plan to stay in the country.

Do you have relatives, friends or family in the USA?

Even if you are not planning to visit them, you should answer in the affirmative, if you have friends, relatives or family staying in the USA. Also, you should know some of their basic details (where they stay, how long have they been in the US, etc.).

Why do you want to travel during this particular time?

State your replies clearly and again, honestly. For business travellers, it would be getting an opportunity at this particular time and for leisure travellers, it would be getting a leave from office or such other reasons.

Can you cut short your stay?

You would have to answer this question if you have applied for the visa for 6 months or longer. Be prepared with a strong and relevant answer for why you have to stay for a long time in the USA.

Where would you be staying in the USA?

If you are staying with a family or friend, memorize their home address. If not, mention the states or cities you are visiting.

How much do you think the trip would cost?

It would be best to calculate the expenses beforehand. You not only have to answer the question but also have to prove that you have enough money to cover the expenses. If you have a sponsor in the US, you may need to submit some documents like bank letter, employment letter, letter to the consulate, invitation letter, income tax documents, marriage certificate, original birth certificate, proof of green card, etc. You should have enough information about your sponsor.

How can we know for sure that you would return from the USA?

You need to answer this question convincingly. State that you have a job or family in Dubai waiting for you. You can also show the proof of your properties or assets in Dubai. On the other hand, you can also state that you do not want to ruin your travel records by staying in USA even after your visa expires.

A few other questions that you may be asked during the interview include where are you working currently, do you have leave approval from your employee, who will take care of your family or business when you are in the USA, have you travelled abroad before, are you going to work in the US during your visit, etc.

The US visa interview would not take more than 10 minutes, and you would not be asked all the questions mentioned here. But be prepared for everything. Moreover, the key to crack the visa interview is to answer the questions truthfully and honestly.
